What Motivates the Tea Party? Fear of a Brown Planet

Before we can talk about what the tea party is scared of we must firstdefine who the tea party is. Contrary to misconceptions perpetrated by themedia, the tea party is not a group dominated by backwoods, racist rubes fromBumblestraw, Arkansas.  Sure there are some wing nut, racists in the teaparty, but the vast majority of tea partiers are a combination of poor, middleand upper class whites who generally align themselves with Republican ideals ofsmall government, low taxes and free market capitalist principles. Plainly speaking, the tea party believes that people should be free to formbusinesses, make money, and live their lives however they want with minimalgovernment interference.  That doesn’t sound too bad, right?  So whyare tea partiers so vilified and hated by democrats and other non-teapartiers?  Because too many tea partiers believe that America is anexclusive club reserved for white men and the women and few minorities theyallow in.

For most of American history the whole country was one big tea party. Outside of the up and down of the great depression America has experienced anunencumbered period of growth and success based on capitalism and free marketprinciples.  White people were free to form businesses, make laws, formexclusive clubs and get rich.  Sounds great for the people in power, butit was a struggle for those who were not stereotypical white Americans. Women couldn’t make laws (until the 20th century).  Blacks couldn’t getrich (they were victims of slavery and Jim Crow).  Mexicans could comehere and work for those in power, but the vast majority were not allowed intothe exclusive clubs or even given the path citizenship.  Gay people simplyhad to stay in the closet for fear of being ostracized or worse.

Didn’t we invade “America” and kill 90% of the Indians?  And since whendo we tax children in the U.S.?

White men (whether republican or democrat) historically have had theunencumbered path to be middle class OR rich OR powerful OR basic citizens, andthey took full advantage of that freedom to become all these things.  Forevery arrogant rich white man there is a good and peaceful rich whiteman.  For every racist white organization there is a white organizationdevoted to equality for all.  The point is, there was unencumbered path tochoose your own destiny if you were white in America.  For those whiteAmericans who truly believe in equality for all, America is turning into abeautiful place: minorities and whites are integrating, marrying and creatingbeautiful rainbow children; our culture is rich with music, food, sports andentertainment that represent the true melting pot of America; and our politicallandscape has advanced enough where minorities can hold public office and eventhe highest public office in the land.

For the tea party these changes are not to be celebrated.  These eventsall point to a loss of power and control that symbolizes the destruction of theUS as they know it.  The economic downturn in America is seen by many teapartiers as being caused by the degeneration of our society through theinfusion of hip hop culture, freedom given to women, the allowance of Mexicanimmigration and the granting of power to the black president.  If leftuncontained, tea partiers believe their way of life will be forever lost, withall the wealth they have amassed lost and redistributed to others and thecountry being blown off the map by the “evil Muslims”.  The tea party seesall this and is in complete fear – fear of financial loss and fear of a brownplanet.

The tea partier is quick to say “we want our country back”.  From theirperspective it is easy to see why they think they lost it.  Turn on theTV, flip on the radio, or walk outside and it is clear that “the brown peopleare taking over”:

White middle class neighborhoods have experienced more foreclosures thanhave been seen in 70 years Every unemployment office in America now has morewhite people in line than  serving clients A show like “Little House onthe Prairie” wouldn’t last a day on television in this era.  The BradyBunch will get no ratings.  Beaver Cleaver has been replaced by “TheSituation”. If you can find 1 American-born white person on an NBA basketballteam you would be lucky (by the way, Steve Nash is Canadian) Go to anyMcDonalds in America and 70% of the workers are Mexican (the rest are black)Mexicans line the streets of many major cities looking for work (and gettingit) Factories that used to contain predominantly black and poor white workersare now filled with undocumented Mexicans and a few black and fewer whiteworkers Turn on the radio or go to a club and its rap all day all night Skinnyblack tattooed brothers like Li’l Wayne are the new sex symbol (for all women)Black superstars are almost exclusively dating and marrying white women (andthese white women want these black men!) And the worst one of all – a black manis running the United States of America.

The issues surrounding the tea party opinion of President Obama are the mostglaring examples of the irrational fear that drives the tea party.

20% of Americans (higher in the form of tea party members known as“birthers”) believe that President Obama was not born in thiscountry.  Tea Party Translation – Obama is an outsider whodoesn’t believe in our American values.  He cannot be trusted to advocatefor us and lead us.

Many tea party members also believe that President Obama is amuslim.  Tea Party Translation – Obama is a part of the groupthat is the sworn enemy of America.  He will turn on us and get us allkilled.

Obama is a strong advocate for health care for all. Tea Party Translation – Obama wants to take all our money and give it to thepoor Blacks and Mexicans.  We can’t afford to take care of them because weneed that money for our own families.

Clearly from a social standpoint the Tea Party is correct that things havechanged dramatically in America in the last 20 years.  Where black andbrown people have been given unfettered equal opportunity (music, sports andentertainment) they have taken full advantage and have produced a mixed bag ofresults.  For every Drake there is a Li’l Wayne.  For every KevinDurant there is a Lebron James.  For every Beyonce there is a KanyeWest.  Tiger Woods is a womanizer but for every Tiger Woods you can name100 white athletes who have had multiple affairs.  In reality, men withpower have always had multiple women outside of the marriage almost as a “rightof power”.  The difference today is that Tiger Woods issues and all theissues mentioned above are all over the media.

Tea Partiers are bombarded daily with images and stories on all the popularwebsites, news channels, newspapers, i-pads, and cell phones about: how bad theUS economy is, how black and brown people are doing wrong, how thugs have takenover music, how there are no jobs out there and the Mexicans will take themall.  Of course they are scared.  I would be scared too if any ofthese things had anything to do with reality or real power.  The truth is,none of these items have anything to do with real power in America.  Realpower in America comes from having money and the vast amount of money is in thehands of billionaire republicans.

Billionaire republicans still run this country through their corporationsand their influence over the political bodies that make and enforce the laws ofthis country. They have co-opted the tea party as their representatives to makesure that the masses vote for the political bodies that will best servebillionaire republicans.  The tea party members are willing recruits, astheir moral, political, and social value systems are most aligned withbillionaire republicans.  As a tea partier who is scared about losingcontrol and power in America, it is only natural to align yourself with thegroup that has all the power to restore things to their “natural order”. In order for power to be restored billionaire republicans are going to have tomake some changes.  Crackdowns on programs for the poor anddisenfranchised must come.  Healthcare for all, social security afterworking all your life, and Medicare for the sick and elderly all take money outof tea party pockets and must be changed or eliminated.  Mexicans must goback to Mexico so white people can have their jobs.  Okay, so white peoplewon’t do those jobs, but Mexicans must go back anyway because the tea partyjust says so. The republicans, backed by the tea party have formed a posse tocome and get their country back and unfortunately after November 2nd there’sgonna be some new sheriffs in a lot of towns.

More on the Republican crackdown later…

MaybeStates Could Just Swap Their Senators

Wisconsin and Illinois could actually swap senators. Never mind that voterselected them in different places (heck, when has what the voters wanted everstood in the way of progressive hope and change?)… what matters is thateverybody’s drinking beer and voting with people they completely agree with.I’m sure there must be a commensurate number of minority Republican statesenators in Illinois who’d be happy to commute to Madison to provide a quorum, and to have some beers with other Repubs.

Tariffsand Limits

Today’s news is dominated by political parties posturing as if they know howto solve pressing problems with real answers. What we see happening inWisconsin is only the beginning of desperate actions to come if we don’t beginto come up with real long-term jobs. Is the pay scale we receive for a jobimportant? Sure it is, but without jobs the pay scale does not matter.Politicians don’t seem to get the effects of losing somewhere between 9% and20% of our jobs.
